The inventory blind spot behind modern diagnostics

Regionshospitalet Horsens’ biochemical department reflects the complexity of laboratory inventory management at scale. The department performs approximately 6,500 diagnostic tests daily on Roche’s cobas diagnostic test lines, involving about 200 products handled by roughly 70 laboratory professionals.

Before implementation, manual processes sometimes made it difficult to assess precise inventory levels and replenishment needs. Limited space and the challenge of managing product numbers consistently sometimes meant staff used older stock items. Regular order adjustments and occasional extra replenishments added work to an already demanding environment.

How Roche automated lab inventory control

Roche selected Tecsys Elite as the technology foundation for navify Inventory, part of Roche’s navify portfolio of digital solutions. The cloud-based platform automates the inventory lifecycle for laboratory reagents and consumables, from visibility into what is on hand to consumption tracking and replenishment.

Tecsys Elite integrates with Roche’s SAP backend, connecting laboratory inventory activity with the broader enterprise environment.

Instead of relying on staff to continually monitor supplies and initiate replenishment manually, laboratories gain a more automated workflow supported by centralized, real-time visibility, user tracking and automated replenishment.

The transformation included:

Real-time inventory visibility

Laboratory teams gain a clear view of inventory levels, requirements and product availability.

Automated replenishment

The system monitors inventory activity and triggers reorder actions, reducing manual intervention.

Connected SAP workflows

Integration with Roche’s SAP backend supports a consistent inventory lifecycle across reagents and consumables.

Standardized ordering and expiry management

At Regionshospitalet Horsens, ordering was standardized, manual supply checks were eliminated and expiry management improved.

Turning manual counts into controlled workflows

Within the first six months after deployment at Regionshospitalet Horsens, more than 98% of Roche product orders were placed through the system. Ordering was standardized, manual checks on supply availability were eliminated and physical counts dropped from about 60 minutes to 10 minutes.

The department also reported smaller delivery batch sizes, lower packaging waste, improved control over Roche and non-Roche supplies and better expiry management.
